The Dutch international wants a move to a bigger club, with Liverpool understood to be his preferred destination.
Southampton defender Virgil van Dijk has handed in a transfer request and declared he feels "insulted by the suggestion that it was me who refused to train.”
The Dutch international wants a move to a bigger club, and is eager to move immediately.
A host of Premier League clubs, including Chelsea and Manchester City, have been monitoring his situation.
But it is understood that the ex-Celtic centre-half still has his heart set on a move to Liverpool.
Van Dijk was left out of the pre-season tour of France, when Mauricio Pellegrino said he was in not the right state of mind to play.
Pellegrino also stated that he was training alone after refusing to play - something Van Dijk vehemently denies. He believes he has been hung out to dry by the club.
"Unfortunately I feel I have no alternative after I was given notice of the Club's intention to impose a disciplinary sanction against me of a fine equivalent to 2 weeks wages. I will be appealing what I feel to be an unjustified sanction and their inability to follow the correct disciplinary protocol in due course.
