Arsenal are expected to launch an ambitious bid for Schalke attacking midfielder Julian Draxler.
Schalke are on the verge of signing Kevin-Prince Boateng from AC Milan in a move that could pave the way for Draxler to leave the club.
Previously a target for Chelsea, Draxler, 19, is one of the most highly-rated youngsters in the German game.
Arsenal are known to have a large transfer budget to spend and there is a feeling around the Emirates Stadium that manager Arsene Wenger would rather invest that money in a player he can develop.
The Gunners were outbid by Napoli for previous target Gonzalo Higuain, who at 25, Wenger is thought to have considered too one-dimensional.
Draxler however, is believed to have been targeted for his greater versatility.
The young German would be a more economically sound investment too as he is likely to significantly improve, something that may convince Arsenal to part with a record transfer fee.
, Schalke general manger Hotst Heldt intimated the club would be willing to sell the player, but insisted he would not come cheap.
