Posh manager Darren Ferguson has had three bids for the player rejected and has now called upon Saints' chairman Steve Brown to name his price.
May, who signed a one-year deal ahead of the start of the season, was out on loan to Alloa Athletic and Hamilton Accies for much of last term but since his return to McDiarmid Park he has produced revelatory form with manager Tommy Wright keen to retain his services.
Wright dismissed reports that Posh had bid £250,000 for the 20-year-old front man, but confirmed: “There has been further communication from Peterborough but no new formal bid. It is not dead in the water and further discussions may take place between the two clubs.
“Stevie is being kept informed every step of the way, as he has been from the start of their interest. We have kept him informed of the bids.
“There has been no cloak and dagger stuff. Three offers have been made but none came close to our valuation of a player we have brought through the youth system and farmed out on loan to progress his career.
“He knows how highly I regard him and that is reflected in the games he has played in Europe and in the Scottish Premiership so far this season. He has featured in all five matches.
“I wouldn’t want to lose him to any club but the chairman does have a valuation on Stevie. Right now I have told Stevie he is only a few games into a new season in the top division in Scotland and he just has to keep progressing.”
