The Red Devils are set to make a club record bid for Cesc Fabregas but will move for Bastian Schweinstegier if it fails.
Manchester United are set to make one final attempt to sign Barcelona midfielder Cesc Fabregas but have lined up Bastian Schweinsteiger as an alternative if the bid fails.
The Red Devils will offer £35 million plus add-ons for the Spanish play-maker but it is touch and go whether Fabregas will want to leave his beloved Barcelona and move back to the Premier League.
This means that United boss David Moyes has had to think of alternatives and Schweinstegier is believed to be at the top of that list.
The German star, who helped Bayern Munich win the treble last season, could face a fight to retain his place in the clubs first team due to Pep Guardiola’s preference for playing only one holding midfielder.
That looks set to be either Javi Martinez or Thiago Alcantara, meaning Schweinstegier maybe be left on the bench at the Allianz Arena.
The midfielder is 29 but Bayern would still demand a transfer fee of around £25 million for him.
Should Schweinsteiger come onto the market, then United would face plenty of competition for his signature, with Chelsea and Arsenal likely to be interested.
However, it will all come down to whether United are successful in their long pursuit of Fabregas.
