The highly rated Ajax man has been the subject of much interest from England this year, with Norwich and Liverpool also keen on him.
Norwich had a bid for the defender accepted by Ajax last week, but the player turned down a move to Carrow Road in search of a transfer elsewhere.
He agreed terms with Bundesliga side Bayer Leverkusen earlier this summer but the deal collapsed at the 11th hour.
Ajax are keen to sell the 24-year-old this summer as he is out of contract in June and they are fearful of losing him for free.
And the Eredivisie champions are expecting an approach from Everton over the coming weeks, with Roberto Martinez keen to strengthen his squad further before the start of his maiden campaign at Goodison Park.
