Arsenal want to make Wayne Rooney an offer he can't refuse as they bid to assemble the richest strike force in their history.
The Gunners boss Arsene Wenger has £70 million for transfers this summer as the debt on their stadium build reduces and the manager has been making behind-the-scenes moves for the player.
The club are close to landing Gonzalo Higuian from Real Madrid for £22 million on personal terms of £130,000-a-week.
But that won't stop the manager spending another £25 million on Manchester United's Rooney and making him a £180,000-a-week offer which includes an image rights deal.
Until this season the club has had a pay ceiling of around £70,000 in place but times have changed in a big way and they are now going head to head with Chelsea as they bid to bring the england striker to the Emirates.
Rooney has been on £250,000 a week at Old Trafford but knows he will have to take a pay cut to remain in the Premier League.
Robin van Persie is on the same figure a week as Rooney and Wenger is hoping for a little 'revenge' in getting his strike partner.
If Wenger gets Wayne, the spending won't end there because he has also targeted his central defence as another area which needs strengthening with two more players set to join.
